Sicily

The island of Sicily is Italy’s largest region and is also its most varied. In terms of geography, there are offshore islands, endless coastline, rugged mountains, rolling wheatfields and volcanos, but its history and architecture are also of note. Sicily formed a significant portion of the Greek empire, was strategically vital to Rome, and was invaded in succession by the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Spanish and Bourbons, before unifying with Italy. Each conquest left its mark, to create a palimpsest of cultures on the island.

  • Erice

The wonderfull place of Erice http://www.lasicilia.es/erice

  • This is a day trip west of Palermo. AMAZING sea and Natural Park.

  • Extremely good Ristorante in Taormina, they serve the best Tiramisu and White Chocolate Moose!

  • Easy to get from Palermo, this small village is perched above beautiful coastline and right on the edge of a national park - Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro. Lots of walking, breathtaking views, amazing seafood and you can swim all year round.

  • Sicilian lemons are the best in the world, large, and juicy. Buy as many as you can carry from a market stall holder, just before you return home. Once home, any lemons you cannot use immediately will quickly go off so we extract the juice and freeze it in plastic bowls so that small quantities can be used regularly until your next visit.

  • Taormina

A must see!! I was recommended to see this place by my Sicilian friends and wasn't disappointed by the beautiful city.

  • Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina

It is the remains of a Roman villa and has the richest, largest and most complex collection of late Roman mosaics in the world. The Villa Romana del Casale is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • The vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna, between Taormina and Catania, are an amazing view! If you're driving, you can have a great day out going to the top of the Volcano and on the way down, stop by the vineyards (Agriturismo) and have a lovely lunch with the local wine, which is also very nice and cheap! :)
