  • The Alcantara River runs at the bottom of a 20-m (65-ft) deep basalt gorge. From the car park, with waders for rent, walk down the steps or take the lift to the bottom, where you can hike between the narrow walls and over waterfalls.

  • Boating, Aeolian Islands

    The best way to visit hidden coves and grottoes, and the only way to get from island to island, is by boat. From Marina Corta in Lipari take your pick from a wide selection of organized tours. For experienced sailors, boat rentals are available.

  • You can hike up the slopes to Vulcano’s crater following the signs al cratere . Take a guide from the hydrofoil dock up the active volcano Stromboli.

  • The Madonie mountains are crisscrossed with marked trails graded for difficulty; several trails are suitable for the disabled. The trail map is available from the park service, tourist offices of larger towns within the park system, or from the tourist office in Palermo. The Italian Alpine Club organizes guided excursions.

  • Ascend towards the main crater or hike the slopes accompanied by a guide.

  • The Nebrodi Mountain Park encompasses protected yew and beech woods, pastureland, a wetlands habitat for migratory birds, birds of prey and wild horses. The park includes 21 villages where artisans produce local goods and food. Marked trails are available for hiking.

  • The trails of the Madonie can be used by horse riders too. Several groups arrange trips.

  • There are about 10 ski runs on Etna. Lift tickets and equipment rentals are available.

  • Good swimming abounds in the Aeolians – the water is clear and rich in marine life.

  • Below the promontory, from Capo Tindari towards Oliveri and Falcone, the Tindari-Oliveri reserve is good for a quiet walk along the sand formations and lakes with blue-green water.
