1. Porta Nuova
This gateway to the city was erected in 1535 as a triumphal arch to commemorate Charles V’s victory in Tunis.

2. Oratorio di Santa Cita
The interior of this chapel is covered with stucco decoration and Giacomo Serpotta’s masterpiece of Biblical and historical scenes (c.1600).

3. Palazzo Mirto
One of the few surviving aristocratic palazzi in Palermo. The lavish interior is intact with furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

4. Castello della Zisa
From the Arabic al-Aziz (splendid), the palace lives up to its name. Arab craftsmen incorporated stalactite ceilings, interior fountains, mosaic decoration and an ingenious ventilation system.

This old neighbourhood winds around behind the cathedral down to via Maqueda. A residential area with bars, a puppet theatre and a good food market, it’s a slice of Palermo’s inner-city life.

Burial ground of Palermo’s upper classes (1599–1881); the niches still contain skeletons.
