  • 1. Hotel Sport Club Portorais, Palermo

Minutes from Palermo airport, but this is not a typical airport hotel. There are ample, airy public spaces, modern rooms, a gym, a nice pool area, private beach, bar and restaurant.

  • 2. Hotel Pomara, San Michele di Ganzaria

One of the most comfortable options inland. The location is rustic and affords excellent views of the rolling, wheat-covered hills but the family-run hotel is modern. Great views from the pool, excellent restaurant on site, and convenient for visiting Enna, Piazza Armerina, Morgantina and Caltagirone.

  • 3. Hotel Posta, Palermo

Recently renovated, this 2-star hotel is an excellent bargain choice in Palermo. The 27 rooms are large and clean, the public areas are equipped with a TV, parking is available, and there is free entry to a private beach in Mondello. Near the church of San Domenico.

  • 4. Al Madarig, Castellammare del Golfo

A super comfortable 3-star hotel. Rooms have refrigerators, modern baths and shuttered geranium-clad windows overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare. A good base for visiting northwest Sicily.

  • 5. Hotel del Corso, Taormina

A family-run, 3-star hotel recommended by locals, with good views. The newly renovated modern rooms have small terraces looking over the hillside, the Bay of Naxos and Mount Etna. Parking is also available.

  • 6. Nuovo Hotel Russo, Trapani

Part of the Sole hotel chain, in an excellent location in Trapani’s historic centre. The hotel resembles a grand-mother’s living room despite a recent make-over. Rooms are serviceable and clean. Reserve a parking space in their tiny garage for a small fee. They usually encourage you to go out for breakfast, which is a joy in lively Trapani.

  • 7. Hotel Airone, Zafferana Etnea

A good base for Mount Etna excursions. In the pine woods above Zafferana Etnea, this 3-star hotel is built in mountain style, with nicely furnished rooms and an open dining room. There is a new pool and spa too. They can arrange trips up the volcano, horseriding and golf.

  • 8. Hotel President, Marsala

A new, ultra-modern 124-room hotel with pool, convention rooms and beach access. Good value for all the facilities included.

  • 9. Albergo Aegusa, Favignana

Modern rooms, a terrace, a small garden restaurant and easy access to the beach.

  • 10. Alceste, Selinunte

Another Sole hotel, the Alceste is a reasonably priced, family-run establishment in the quiet fishing village at Selinunte. Breakfast is served on a terrace with a beautiful view overlooking the sea.
