  • 1. Pocho Residence Isulidda, San Vito lo Capo

    Nice small pensione with nine clean, modern rooms, wooden furniture and amazing views of Monte Cofano and the gulf. They offer a cooking course, arrange airport transfers, horseback riding, tour guides, and boat and diving excursions. The restaurant is famous for its cous cous (see Pocho, San Vito lo Capo).

  • 2. Pensione Tranchina, Scopello

    A 10-room pensione in this tiny fishing village. Rooms are nicely decorated with iron or wooden bedsteads, and several have a view of the sea. The ground-floor sitting area has a fireplace and the owners cook excellent Sicilian cuisine, mostly fresh seafood and vegetables from their garden.

  • 3. Hotel Victoria, Taormina

    A 2-star pensione . The breakfast room has a terrace and view down onto the Corso. Rooms are comfortable and there are 3 parking spots.

  • 4. Lido Azzurro, Selinunte

    The rooms in this small pensione on Selinunte’s promenade are clean, cheerfully decorated and serviceable, some with terraces. There’s a front porch for sitting out to watch the passeggiata , and a discount on meals at the owners’ restaurant across the street.

  • 5. L’Arca, Noto

    Small, four-room pensione in the heart of Noto’s historic centre, in a private courtyard (you enter through an arch, hence the name). Great location, serviceable rooms and helpful staff.

  • 6. La Giara, Cefalù

    This pensione in Cefalù’s historic centre has undergone a major renovation. Rooms are equipped with TVs and air conditioning, and some have a terrace with a view down the narrow streets and to the sea.

  • 7. Albergo Domus Mariae, Syracuse

    The Ursuline sisters run a hotel in a restored 19th-century palazzo on Ortygia. Some of the modern 18 rooms offer air conditioning and a sea view. Books up quickly.

  • 8. Monastero di San Benedetto, Noto

    Benedictine sisters welcome you to their 17th-century monastery. Rooms are modern, large and clean, and most have baths. A 10:30pm curfew.

  • 9. Casa dell’Accoglienza Don Giustino by the Padri Vocazionisti

    About 16 km (12 miles) from Agrigento in a little seaside village. The modern hotel, run by priests, sits right on the beach, and many rooms have a terrace. Simple restaurant, bar and parking.

  • 10. Albergo Don Bosco Emmaus, Zafferana Etnea

    This large modern building sits in the forest above Zafferana Etnea. Many of the furnished rooms have terraces and views of Mount Etna or the sea.
