1. Sea Turtles
Rare sea turtles bury their eggs in the sands of the Belice Estuary and the Pelagie Islands.

2. Sanfratellano Horse
A species indigenous to the Nebrodi, descendant of the ancient Equus sicanus .

3. Birds of Prey
Golden eagles, peregrine falcons and owls hunt in the island’s nature reserves.

4. Cactus
The Fico d’India , or prickly pear, is omnipresent as it thrives in Sicily’s arid climate.

5. Dwarf Palm
The tiny palm flourishes in the northwest; its fronds are used by craftsmen for weaving baskets and brooms.

6. Fennel
Bright yellow, fluffy green or tall and crispy brown, depending upon the season, it covers hillsides and springs up along the side of roads.

7. Agave
The low-growing aloe-like plant with curling spiky leaves shoots out a central stalk that can reach up to 12 m (40 ft).

8. Flowering Vines
Growing out of control and perfuming the countryside are jasmine, bougainvillea, honeysuckle and morning glory.

9. Thistle
The hearty, spiky plant pops up along roadsides and in fields with its bright purple flowers – not to be confused with cultivated artichokes.

10. Forests
The few remains of once prevalent pine, oak, cork-oak and beech forests are now carefully protected.
