Sydney is blessed with stunning ocean beaches, magnificent national parks and a wonderful subtropical climate that makes the great outdoors irresistible to its four million inhabitants. The Eora people, the Aborigines who settled around Sydney Harbour, arrived approximately 50,000 years ago, while the white settlers arrived just over 200 years ago. Free settlers soon followed in the wake of the First Fleet of transported convicts, and after them several waves of migrants seeking a new life. Now, two centuries later, the once far-flung penal colony has matured into a culturally diverse, tolerant and mesmerizing city. Ideally located on the world’s most beautiful harbour, Sydney is as exciting and bustling as it is laid back and relaxing.

It doesn’t do cocktails, but punters flock to this giant waterside pub until bouncers are turning the hordes away. Get there early and be prepared for the very mainstream crowd.

Bush dancers of any experience level are all welcome to join the fun.

Sydney may be a bustling city, but the peace and quiet of the bush is just a short train ride away. There are 24 national parks in and around Sydney (see Parks & Gardens), and all offer excellent bushwalks of varying experience levels. Take a guided tour with the NPWS and learn all about native animals and bush foods.

Open 24 hours for coffee and Spanish treats with the poets, artists and musos.

This laidback courtyard café is patronized by art school kids and grungy types. Feel at home in the arty ambience with comfortable sofas, good coffee, and vegetarian options such as scrambled tofu and juices.

The delicious North African food at this small café is loaded with aromatic flavours such as cinnamon, mint and cumin. Try the varied meze plates with dukkah -coated Turkish bread. The big servings are great value.

The perfect place for a romantic dinner with its moody lighting, a Mod Oz/Asian menu and gorgeous harbour views. Check out the cigar bar and jazz on Friday nights.
