Sydney

Sydney is blessed with stunning ocean beaches, magnificent national parks and a wonderful subtropical climate that makes the great outdoors irresistible to its four million inhabitants. The Eora people, the Aborigines who settled around Sydney Harbour, arrived approximately 50,000 years ago, while the white settlers arrived just over 200 years ago. Free settlers soon followed in the wake of the First Fleet of transported convicts, and after them several waves of migrants seeking a new life. Now, two centuries later, the once far-flung penal colony has matured into a culturally diverse, tolerant and mesmerizing city. Ideally located on the world’s most beautiful harbour, Sydney is as exciting and bustling as it is laid back and relaxing.

  • Newtown girls love a bit of retro styling, and this is where they find it. New clothes in the style of traditional favourites include T-shirt dresses, minis, shorts and tanks.

  • Nigel Helyer. Whimsical structures play with the tides.

  • On a wild night in 1857, the migrant ship Dunbar, en route to Sydney from England, struck rocks near the Heads. Only one passenger survived, while 121 others drowned. It remains Australia’s worst ever maritime disaster and came as a bitter blow to the young colony.

  • East Ocean

The food receives as much attention as the cool decor; try the braised sea cucumber or fresh abalone.

  • This much-lauded designer duo specializes in unusual textiles and embellishments. Favoured by a slightly older clientele who can afford the hefty price tags.

  • This groovy, gay and sleek corner caféé offers seriously good coffee and snacks. A popular meeting place to hang out and soak up the sun on their outdoor tables.

  • Janet Laurence and Fiona Foley. Symbolizes reconciliation with Aborigines (see Museum of Sydney).

  • Edna’s Table

Having deservedly regained its second hat Aria has confirmed its status as one of Sydeny’s top restaurants with its elegant and inspired take on Mod Oz cuisine. The views over the harbour and Opera House are spectacualr. A more reasonably priced, pre-theatre menu is available.

  • This dandelion-shaped fountain in the Fitzroy Gardens is especially pleasant when illuminated at night. Though many consider it overrated, it is still probably Sydney’s most popularly known public artwork. Designed by Robert Woodward in 1961, it commemorates the participation of Australian soldiers in the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt during WWII, which precipitated Germany’s defeat in North Africa.

  • Great Italian food and friendly service. The red walls and comfort food will make you feel warm inside.
