Sydney

Sydney is blessed with stunning ocean beaches, magnificent national parks and a wonderful subtropical climate that makes the great outdoors irresistible to its four million inhabitants. The Eora people, the Aborigines who settled around Sydney Harbour, arrived approximately 50,000 years ago, while the white settlers arrived just over 200 years ago. Free settlers soon followed in the wake of the First Fleet of transported convicts, and after them several waves of migrants seeking a new life. Now, two centuries later, the once far-flung penal colony has matured into a culturally diverse, tolerant and mesmerizing city. Ideally located on the world’s most beautiful harbour, Sydney is as exciting and bustling as it is laid back and relaxing.

  • Radisson Kestrel Hotel

Choose a lovely ocean view room or suite at this four-star hotel. The Kestrel is close to Fairy Bower Beach (see Cabbage Tree Bay) and a delightful coastal walk.

  • Old railway buildings house this new super-hostel. The entrance is via a platform and some rooms are inside railway carriages. Its facilities include a 24-hour reception and swimming pool.

  • This lovely boutique hotel has recently been refurbished. Split-level suites cost more but are gorgeous, opening onto private terraces with ocean views. There is also a popular bar and a restaurant downstairs.

  • The fold-back glass doors at the ever-crowded Ravesi’s allow the party to spill out onto the street. It’s a great place for a cocktail, but conversation can prove difficult when the backpacker and local crowds get loud.

  • The authentic Sichuanese menu contains delicacies such as Mao Xue Wang and preserved pork. If you’re not feeling brave, stick to the steamed barramundi.

  • Sydney’s best range of rock music and rare records are all packed into an old-style music store. They also sell tickets to most local gigs.

  • Red Lantern

A relaxed atmosphere and red interior add to the fun, but also go for the fresh and spicy southern Vietnamese food and good vegetarian options. Booking is essential.

  • The Kings cross area is a notorious area for prostitution, however, it is also one of the most lively, colorful and entertaining places in Sydney. It is a must see area, just keep your wits about you.

  • Over-scaled openings animate the grand façade of this cool white apartment complex, designed by the architectural style gurus Burley Katon Halliday. The large apartments are situated around a sunny, stone-paved courtyard, complete with sculpture and a great breakfast café.

  • Excellent food, reasonable prices and great service make this local bistro a relaxing stop.
