  • Martini

Upstairs in the Palace Cinema complex, pop in to sip martinis and mull over the latest flick. Fun atmosphere and tasty food.

  • Tiered levels rising to the bar at the back of the main room mean you can see the stage from anywhere in the room. That, plus great acoustics, makes this one of Sydney’s best live music venues. Smaller, more intimate events are held in the newly revamped Transit Lounge.

  • Sip a cocktail and watch Taylor Square from the balcony of this bar, which maintains the perfect balance of glitz and hip.

  • Although this stalwart of the Sydney scene is known as a meat market, it can be trashy fun. It’s usually the last stop on a club crawl. Women are not really welcome.

  • A traditional pub revamped with a restaurant and giant screens. The upper level has a clubby feel with DJs and pool tables.

  • Views don’t come much better than the Opera Bar’s (see Bars & Restaurants) panorama of the harbour, Harbour Bridge and city skyline. Soak up the sun on the terrace during the day, or have drinks under the stars later on. A good bar menu means you can make a night of it, adding to the perfect Sydney experience.

  • Its central location, pub-style bar downstairs and two cocktail lounge bars upstairs – Ginger’s and Gilligan’s – makes the Oxford a great place to meet friends.

  • The fold-back glass doors at the ever-crowded Ravesi’s allow the party to spill out onto the street. It’s a great place for a cocktail, but conversation can prove difficult when the backpacker and local crowds get loud.

  • Red Lantern

A relaxed atmosphere and red interior add to the fun, but also go for the fresh and spicy southern Vietnamese food and good vegetarian options. Booking is essential.

  • This tiny local with much charm and fin-de-siècle interiors is hidden in a backstreet but is certainly worth seeking out.
