  • One of Sydney’s most popular and longest-established nightclubs.

  • While there are many Greek businesses in Marrickville and it’s fun to browse the many shops on Marrickville Road, the best Greek restaurants are spread further out. For wonderful modern food, visit Perama. Steki Taverna is more traditional, plate-smashing included.

  • Vegan food has never tasted so good as at this Buddhist Chinese restaurant. Lunchtime yum cha is excellent.

  • Guillaume at Bennelong

You can’t beat dining at the Opera House (see Sydney Opera House). Celebrity chef Guillaume Brahimi prepares Australian food with French skill. A less expensive option is to order tapas-style dishes from the cocktail bar.

  • Peace, spectacular views and exciting food make for a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

  • This grungy dive bar is the perfect antidote to the super-glam Sydney experience. Meet groovy art students, designers and musicians.

  • This is just the place for a swanky night out. Great drinks and showy Mod Oz food at big-night prices.

  • Icebergs Dining Room

This swish dining room is above the famous swimming pool (see Bondi Icebergs). The decor is glamorous and the food is modern Italian Mediterranean.

  • It’s always packed and you can’t reserve, but they’ll send you to a nearby pub and collect you when a table’s ready. Cheap, authentic and delicious pasta.

  • Indian

Many of Sydney’s Indian community choose to eat at the authentic restaurants in Surry Hills, several of which are packed into a small section of Cleveland Street between Crown and Bourke Streets. Have a South Indian flavoured thali or masala dosa at the vegetarian restaurant Maya, and then sample some of the traditional sweets. The neighbouring shops sell Indian ingredients, spices, incense, and Bollywood movies.
