  • Establishment

This is one of the most fashionable and desirable places in town. Two suites and 33 rooms offer a choice of lively or tranquil colour schemes, marble or stone bathrooms with separate baths and showers, thick sheets, and CD and DVD players.

  • You can count on rooms being spick and span at this reliable budget motel chain. All accommodate three people for the flat room rate, most with a queen and single bunk bed. There’s a TV but not much else.

  • You’ll be able to spot this superbly-located high-rise hotel from many vantages. Inside, the higher the floor number, the better the view. Corner rooms have a full harbour panorama. The marble-clad lobby leads to lovely lounge areas and two fine restaurants.

  • Re-opening in 2005 after massive renovations, the Hilton Sydney is one of the city’spremier land-marks. Alongside super chef Luke Mangan’s glass brasserie and New York designer Tony Chi’s Zeta bar, the luxurious guest rooms include relaxation suites.

  • The location’s great and so is the Heritage-listed woolstore that houses the hotel. They offer good facilities for business travellers in the executive suites.

  • This former gentleman’s mansion is a Woollahra institution. Writers’ groups meet and artists exhibit their work within its walls, providing a connection to the surrounding arty community.

  • The pleasant three-star Ibis hotel is close to all the Darling Harbour attractions, and is a good alternative for a water view without the usual hefty charge.

  • A beautiful 1851 Treasury building offers five-star luxury. The soaring foyer has a lovely lounge. All rooms have window seats, a chaise longue and views of the city or harbour and Botanic Gardens.

  • Have dinner at Jonah’s and stay at their wonderful guesthouse. Each of the eight deluxe rooms has a private balcony with ocean views, a king bed and Jacuzzi.

  • Kirketon

Rates at the über-stylish and formerly super-expensive Kirketon have been slashed, so you can afford to splash on a spacious executive room. This hotel contains some of Sydney’s hottest destinations, including Salt.
