  • At this grand old gentleman’s residence, large bedrooms are lovingly restored. The house is furnished with antiques and Persian carpets.

  • Between the CBD and Bondi, this stylish hotel neighbours a harbourside park. A brisk walk up the hill takes you to Kings Cross and Darlinghurst, and the hotel offers a free shuttle to the city.

  • Historic 1881 buildings have been transformed into a delightful B&B. Most rooms have marble fireplaces, some have four poster beds and all are decked out in authentic period furniture. In winter, snuggle up by the fire in the guest lounge.

  • A high-class hotel for businessmen when it opened in 1894, the Vulcan had a stint as a student jazz bar until it was refurbished. The minimal rooms are fabulous value. The café below sells cheap breakfasts.

  • This hotel’s glamour and reputation as the coolest in Sydney makes up for the smallness of the rooms. Enjoy the luxury robes and Aveda bath products, a fabulous cocktail bar and great restaurants.

  • If your plan for Sydney is all action, this is the place for you. It offers special cushion rooms for watching TV, colour-coded dorm walls and many other facilities.

  • Reasonably priced and well-located, the Waldorf has facilities such as a rooftop pool, spa and sauna, complimentary in-house movies and a shopping service.

  • Studio apartments in this serviced complex are excellent value and good for families. They can sleep up to five people and have full kitchens and living areas. The walk to the city through the Botanic Gardens is lovely.

  • It’s pretty, quiet and clean, offering a good kitchen, library, courtyard and fours, twins and double rooms. The 1877 house has been restored and guests have access to it 24-hours.

  • Expect less of the party crowd at this peaceful backpacker spot since all dorm rooms have just four single beds and are single-sex. There’s coffee, tea and breakfast included in the room price. Standard double rooms are basic but clean.
