  • 1. Kirketon

Rates at the über-stylish and formerly super-expensive Kirketon have been slashed, so you can afford to splash on a spacious executive room. This hotel contains some of Sydney’s hottest destinations, including Salt.

  • 2. Medusa

Medusa makes its own rules as only a boutique hotel can, and traditional room fittings have been replaced by a strong modernist look. Lindt chocolates and Aveda toiletries are complimentary, as is use of a neighbouring gym. There’s also a business room available and dogs are allowed in some rooms.

  • 3. Establishment

This is one of the most fashionable and desirable places in town. Two suites and 33 rooms offer a choice of lively or tranquil colour schemes, marble or stone bathrooms with separate baths and showers, thick sheets, and CD and DVD players.

  • 4. L’Otel

A large terrace house has been converted into a stylish hotel with small but lovely rooms. There’s a hip bar and restaurant downstairs, and the hotel is close to Oxford Street’s cafés and bars.

  • 5. Blacket

A former 1850s bank, the hotel has retained its original features. Various configurations of rooms are available, all stylishly furnished. Ask about deals that include dinner at the restaurant Minc, where you’ll also get complimentary breakfast.

  • 6. Central Park

Their “hip on a budget” slogan is a great description of this hotel. Its reasonably-priced studio rooms and light and airy New York-style loft suites are complemented by neutral colours and clean-lined furniture.

  • 7. Vulcan Hotel

A high-class hotel for businessmen when it opened in 1894, the Vulcan had a stint as a student jazz bar until it was refurbished. The minimal rooms are fabulous value. The café below sells cheap breakfasts.

  • 8. Lord Nelson

Get a taste of Colonial Sydney in the pretty rooms at this famous sandstone pub. The accommodation includes modern necessities such as dataports. Breakfast is included.

  • 9. Altamont

At this fun budget hotel, all rooms have cable TV and solid, comfy wooden furniture. There are discount weekly rates and a few top-quality backpacker rooms: they fill up quickly, so book them early.

  • 10. Tricketts B&B

At this grand old gentleman’s residence, large bedrooms are lovingly restored. The house is furnished with antiques and Persian carpets.
