Called the Golden Mile, the stretch of Oxford Street (see Oxford & Crown Streets) between Taylor Square and Hyde Park has long been home to gay and lesbian bars, clubs and shops. The best of the Oxford Street bars is a mock Central American jungle. Giant windows open to the street, allowing the Colombian to serve up people-watching with the beer. The crowd is a mixed bunch of gay, lesbian and straight, and after sundown the vibe turns from relaxed afternoon drinks to a party.

A good spot for those who’d rather avoid a mainstream gay bar, this pub attracts a trendy Darlinghurst crowd. On Sundays it’s packed with those recovering from their weekends with a beer and game of pool.

Queer-friendly all the time, Wednesday nights are “dykes nights” at this popular Newtown pub. Most people head straight for the cocktail bar out back. There’s also a large beer garden downstairs and a good Thai restaurant.

This café might as well be a bar, with its 24-hour service, loud music, tables spilling out onto the street and opportunities to befriend diners at neighbouring tables. Partiers out on the street pop in for a late-night snack or a caffeinated boost. By day it’s quieter but no less busy.

Some of the classic drag show venues have closed down, but these stalwarts are still going strong. The Imperial was featured in the cult film Priscilla, Queen of the Desert . There are shows at both venues every night, so call ahead to find out events and times.

All kinds of queer fiction are packed into this great shop, which covers everything from photography tomes to contemporary lesbian fiction and lifestyle books. Buy some holiday reading and check out the other bibliophiles.

These traditional Korean baths have separate male and female facilities that include steam rooms, saunas, hot baths and the famous ginseng baths. Soak in the soothing waters or get a skin scrub and massage.

This laidback courtyard café is patronized by art school kids and grungy types. Feel at home in the arty ambience with comfortable sofas, good coffee, and vegetarian options such as scrambled tofu and juices.

Sydney’s original gay sauna and gym offers an indoor swimming pool, weights area, spa and steam room. There are also video and coffee lounges, towel-free nights and a DJ on weekends. Only men are allowed at Ken’s, an easy bus ride from Taylor Square.
