  • Swan

A Formica-topped counter and reclaimed diner booths lend this bustling spot a 1950s feel, but the food is decidedly contemporary. Eggs are scrambled with smoked oysters and pancetta, sautéed spinach accompanies trout eggs benny. Excellent Americano coffee, but alas, no free refills.

  • Elegant French food on a seasonal menu, which always includes game. Located in a former church, built in 1874.

  • This unpretentious Hungarian restaurant is a Yorkville mainstay. Tucked away in a mall, it serves goulash soup, Wiener Schnitzel , homemade desserts, and excellent espresso.

  • As the name suggests, seafood is the specialty – though there’s steak, too. Try the local Great Lakes catch.

  • This restaurant styles itself as a club (and yes, non-members do pay slightly more); the freight-elevator ride to the fifth floor loft only adds to the exclusive feel of the place. A prix fixe menu favors French classics such as foie gras , duck breast, and langoustine. In winter, candles, fireplace, and couches make things lavishly cozy. In summer, try for a table on the rooftop terrace.

  • Savory roast and catch of the day join delights such as lobster agnolotti and lime-crusted rack-of-lamb on the menu of this upscale hotel restaurant.

  • Verveine

The decor is soothing (soft lighting and linens), the food highend comfort: smoked salmon with truffled scrambled eggs, poached eggs on croissant (see Verveine).

  • Contemporary French cuisine and excellent brunches are the draw at this Leslieville favorite (see Verveine).

  • Authentic Italian food – pasta, seafood, and wood-fired oven pizzas – and an award-winning wine cellar which, with over 3,000 selections, is an oenophile magnet.

  • Warm and cozy, thanks to a fireplace and numerous rooms, though it can get crowded. Salads, sandwiches, pastas, and desserts are dished up 24/7.
