Travel itinerary - Valletta, Malta

Malta, floating on the cusp of Europe and Africa, with a typically Mediterranean climate, is the perfect summer destination; and Valletta, on its east coast, is a must-see for visitors. A glorious city of golden stone, Valletta straddles a narrow peninsula and is flanked on either side by magnificent natural harbors, affording it stunning views.

This one-day travel itinerary guides you through a tour of Valletta's highlights, taking in beautiful sights and historical attractions; from quaint cafes to spectacular gardens and fascinating museums.

Few city tours begin with bus stations, but Malta's venerable fleet of antique buses is not to be missed. After taking in the unique sights at the bus terminal, head towards the main gate, pausing to buy a delicious date pastry at the mqaret stall, and then stroll onto Triq Ir-Repubblika.

St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

Next on your tour is the most splendid church in the Maltese islands, St John's Co-Cathedral. Designed by Gerolamo Cassar and consecrated in 1578, it looms over Valletta like a giant fortress; but behind this austere exterior is a dazzlingly beautiful interior. Do be warned though, you may be refused entry if you're not dressed respectfully.

Once you have taken in the marble floors and vaulted ceilings of St John's, have a coffee out on the square at the Caffe Cordina: Valletta's most famous café. () If you like to spend your holidays immersed in the local culture then the location of this shady terrace on the square can't be beaten.

Next, continue down the Triq Ir-Repubblika to the charming Casa Rocca Piccola. This exquisite palace was built in the 16th century and has been in the noble de Piro family for the last two centuries. If you book in advance, the Marquis de Piro will give you a guided tour through the rooms full of beautiful furniture and fascinating curiosities, plus personal family portraits and photographs.

Afterwards, have lunch in Café Manoel. Tucked in the stone courtyard of the Manoel Theatre, enjoy a sandwich or soup, whilst listening to opera play in the background.

Street in Valletta

After lunch, return to the Triq Ir-Repubblika and head for the Auberge de Provence, home to the fascinating National Museum of Archaeology. A visit here is essential to fully understand Valetta's extra-ordinary temple culture. Inside, it's worth the admission charge to view the lavish upstairs salon and also be sure not to miss the mysterious "Sleeping Lady" sculpture.

Late in the afternoon, make your way to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for spellbinding views over the Grand Harbour. At dusk, the garden's beautiful fountains and flowers perfectly frame views to the romantic silhouette of the Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Senglea and Kalkara.

Stroll back along the Triq Saint'Ursula and then turn onto the Triq It-Teatru to find a popular dinner destination Trattoria Palazz. This attractive, stone-walled subterranean restaurant is the perfect place to sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy a delicious bowl of pasta after a busy day sight-seeing.

After a leisurely dinner, head up to the rooftop deck of your accommodation, Hotel Juliani. Malta's first boutique hotel, Juliani is the epitome of urban cool and the Eauzone Meze, with its delicious cocktails and fabulous views, is the perfect retreat to end a day in Valletta.
