Osteria Belle Donne , [ Via Delle Belle Donne ] .
-
One of the , for me , three best restaurants in Florence [ along with Cibreo Povero and Baldovino ] . Run by the irrepressible Giacinto , Belle Donne serves up good , traditional Tuscan dishes in a delightfully rustic ambience , the little dining area decked out with plants , pots and pictures . It helps if you try and speak a little Italian , it's appreciated [and I think it ensures a better service ! ]. I have dined here on every one of my eight visits to Florence and have never been disappointed . I recommend it .

I was lucky enough to stumble inside one winter night about ten years ago, on a trip to Italy with my parents. It was our second dinner in Florence - which is full of good restaurants, but equally full of mediocre, overpriced tourist traps. It can be hard for a newcomer to tell the difference. Anyway, we stepped inside desperately in need of some respite from the crowds, the cold, the tourist traps and the barrage of shoes staring us down from every store window. As the review above mentions, the decor inside is warm and cozy - it looks a little bit like an "authentic" Italian farmhouse kitchen, with ropes of garlic hanging from the ceiling and farm implements on the walls along with pictures and ceramics. We were seated next to a chalk board describing the night's specialties. I don't particularl remember what we ordered - Osso Buco, maybe - whatever it was, it was delicious. The meal came with a side of the most amazing vegetables I've ever had - a rarity in Italy. We went back every night for the rest of our stay in Florence. I was back last year for a month in Italy and found the Osteria even better - if that's possible - than I'd remembered it. It's one of the few really delicious restaurants I've found in Florence with a low-key atmosphere and low-to-middling prices.
