Venice

The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

  • Active traders whose boats gave their name to the Riva degli Schiavoni (see Riva degli Schiavoni).

  • As well as the brocade slippers and bizarre footwear with built-in toes, special order shoes are also crafted here.

  • Organizer of the 1848 rebellion against Austrian rule, the Venetian patriot (1804–57) is commemorated by a statue in Campo Manin. An independent “republic” was declared and survived 17 months of bombardments and even cholera, concluding with Manin’s exile to Paris.

  • Everyone’s Christmas tree needs one of the joyous gilded cherubs lovingly crafted by wood-carver and painter Danilo. He also makes picture frames and furniture.

  • A range of pastries and wholemeal breads. Try the zaletto , a biscuit baked with pine nuts and sultanas, and of course Baci di Giulietta (Juliet’s Kisses) – almond paste shaped into pursed lips.

  • Detective Aurelio Zen navigates Venice’s murky waters wrought with unease and intrigue.

  • Visconti’s film starring Dirk Bogarde is now as classic as the Thomas Mann novel on which it is based (see Death in Venice, Thomas Mann).

  • A portrayal of desire and decadence amid the fog.

  • Dell’Alb0ro

Located in a relaxing residential area near the Sant’Angelo boat stop, this rather plain hotel nevertheless has rooms with all modern facilities and is very central for Piazza San Marco.

  • Few children can boast such a historic home for their primary schooling. A stone lion presides over this former state grain store, essential during the 1559 famine. It was converted in 1921–22.
