Venice

The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

For guided tours around Venice (see Guided Tours)
  • A welcoming eatery whose menu features flavours from the Middle East.

  • Superb Italian elegance from this 50-year-old family-run firm, known worldwide for shoes, belts, bags and jackets.

  • Impressionist Monet and writers Théophile Gautier and Marcel Proust were attracted to the city in the late 1800s.

  • Frette

Since 1860 Frette has been importing top-grade cotton from Egypt and transforming it into towels and custom-made household linen.

  • These can be ordered as spremuta (freshly squeezed juice) or succo di frutta (bottled nectars).

  • These and many other variations punctuate rooftops, their long shafts often running along outside walls.

  • Crumpled boots and a raincoat slung over a chair are actually sculptures – there are even life-size wooden cars, complete with engines.

  • Galleria S.Eufemia

A new gallery dedicated to contemporary art.

  • Unforgettable ice cream made by a true maestro, Carlo. This is the real deal – 100 per cent natural gelato with ginger, spearmint, pistachio, rose petals and green tea!

  • Try Zuppa del doge (candied fruit, egg custard and sponge cake soaked in Marsala) at this great ice cream parlour.
