Venice

The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

For guided tours around Venice (see Guided Tours)
  • A 30-year institution. Try the bigoli in salsa (spaghetti with anchovy and onion purée). Non-smoking rooms and outdoor seating too.

  • Al Bottegon

Not far from the Accademia Bridge, join the locals at this family-run specialist wine cellar that serves excellent Prosecco at the stand-up bar. Simple nibbles to accompany the wine include mortadella sausage and panini rolls filled with sopressa , a local salami.

  • Spanish-Venetian couple Gloria and Marco are discreet hosts and offer spotless rooms close to the San Tomà boat stop. Each room has breakfast-making facilities.

  • Sophisticated candlelit fish dining and Italian wine list.

  • A guaranteed old favourite on a bridge halfway between Rialto and the Piazza San Marco, wonderful for many sights and shopping sprees. Downstairs is Le Bistrot, a popular nightspot (see Le Bistrot de Venise).

  • Al Gatto Nero

Wonderful al fresco fish restaurant, surrounded by Burano’s colourful houses.

  • Centrally located between Rialto and San Marco, this is a basic, decent value hotel. The downstairs walls are papered with sheets from the city’s Il Gazzettino newspaper, a long-standing neighbour until its relocation to the more practical mainland.

  • Al Gobbo

The “Hunchback” is a clean small-scale hotel with a couple of rooms overlooking a bustling square. Easy access from the railway station.

  • Lively eatery with youthful clientele and great pizzas served in the garden.

  • Al Pesador

As seen on Three Sheets: Owner's name is Nicola. Great little bar located near the Rialto Bridge
