Venice

The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

  • Theoretically, that all came to a halt when the industries in Marghera stopped pumping out groundwater. However, recent studies document both a rise in relative sea level, combined with accelerating subsidence due to changes in plate tectonics and soft sediments compacting under the weight of buildings.

  • Escape the crowds in the city with a ferry ride over the vast expanse of the lagoon to this peaceful, lush island, the site of Venice’s original settlement (see Torcello).

  • Close to the sunny Zattere, this religious-trade institution has new modern rooms with bath. Book in advance.

  • Take advantage of lower prices and taxes by stocking up on locally produced wines.

  • A bit out of the way, but it is only a short walk to the main sights. The hostel also benefits from a surprisingly beautiful setting in an ornamental grassy square.

  • This recently opened hostel is located just outside Venice in a lovely country setting. Car parking is available. All linen is provided. Closed October to February.

  • A cheery, helpful hostel close to both the town’s main Tourist Office and the Teatro Olimpico (see Teatro Olimpico). Meals available at a special low price at a neighbouring bar and restaurant. Internet point and bike hire available. Closed one month in winter.

  • IYH Ostello Venezia

Well-run hostel offering cheap meals and a beautiful setting on Giudecca, a 35-minute vaporetto trip from the railway station (line No. 82) and five minutes to Piazza San Marco (see Piazza San Marco).

  • This beautiful 16th-century villa on the hillside above the Roman amphitheatre doubles as the official youth hostel, with dormitory accommodation. It is only 3 km (2 miles) from Verona’s railway station. Evening meals are available.

  • Trained in Florence under sculptor Andrea Sansovino, whose name he adopted in homage, Jacopo (1486–1570) fled to Venice to escape the sacking of Rome. Of his outstanding architecture are the Libreria and Zecca (see Piazza San Marco).
