Venice

The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

For guided tours around Venice (see Guided Tours)
  • Resembling a caravel sailing ship, the trestle tables are adorned with pewter plates. Fish and meat dishes. Good wine list.

  • Tucked away just off the Strada Nuova, this modern eatery offers a choice of 140 Italian wines, innovative Tuscan and Veneto cuisine and a pleasant courtyard.

  • World-famous opera and concert performances are back at this glorious theatre, re-inaugurated in December 2003 (see Teatro La Fenice). Productions range from Verdi and Rossini to contemporary composers.

  • Egg cups, teapots and platters are some of the delightful hand-‑turned objects available here.

  • Handmade beads, photo frames and Murano glass creations.

  • In a pretty square behind the Riva degli Schiavoni (see Riva degli Schiavoni), a rather ramshackle but authentic palace atmosphere greets guests. The rooms are modest but comfortable.

  • Innovative Italian cuisine in relaxing, designer modern surrounds. Inspiring choice of cheese and wines.

  • Head for the Riviera di San Nicolò at the Lido (see Lido: beach side) to watch this ancient ceremony of “Venice wedding the Sea”. A costumed “doge” casts a ring into the sea amid a procession of celebratory boats. Symbolizing Venice’s maritime supremacy, the Sensa has been staged since Venice took Istria and Dalmatia in AD 997.

  • Delicious vegetarian fare, with the promise of unforgettable chocolate desserts.

  • Just off the main Cannaregio canal is this delightful bookshop dedicated to youngsters. One stand is packed with illustrated children’s books in English, audio cassettes and games. Kids love crawling into the cubby hole to enjoy their purchases.
