Venice

The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

  • In addition to the cafés in Vicenza’s main square, come to admire the buildings by Palladio, whose 16th-century designs shaped both his home town and architecture worldwide (see Andrea Palladio). The basilica boasts twin levels of colonnaded arches, opposite his Loggia del Capitaniato. A statue of the architect stands at the western end of the basilica.

  • Originally Verona’s Roman forum, this picturesque square is still a great place for discussing business over a coffee. Parasols shade souvenirs at the animated market, watched over by a winged lion atop a column, vestige of Venetian domination. The 84-m (275-ft) Torre Lamberti offers great city views.

  • Elegance and opulence sit side by side in what Napoleon named “the drawing room of Europe”. This magnificent square is adorned with monuments that give testimony to Venice’s glorious past (see Piazza San Marco).

  • This tiny club, which does not open until 11pm, has a wonderful laidback atmosphere. Entrance close to the Accademia gallery.

  • A native of Lombardy, sculptor Pietro (1435–1515) took over as director of works at the Doge’s Palace when Antonio Rizzo fled, accused of embezzlement. His trademark is a leafy bas-relief pattern, also seen on his Renaissance masterpiece, Santa Maria dei Miracoli (see Santa Maria dei Miracoli).

  • Longhi’s (1702–85) witty scenes of the well-to-do in Venice can be admired at Ca’ Rezzonico (see Ca’ Rezzonico).

  • Piazza San Marco wouldn’t be the same without them, but their droppings play havoc with the stonework.

  • Oven-fresh take-away pizza, smothered with both traditional and innovative toppings.

  • Easily the best pizza in Venice, with delicious toppings of Treviso radicchio or porcini mushrooms. Outdoor seating.
