The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

This Mediterranean fresh produce market has enlivened this quayside since medieval times and is arguably still the best market in the world (see Rialto Market).

This reclaimed thoroughfare between the Zattere and Santa Maria della Salute is dominated by a long building, now a school, where prisoners-of-war of the Republic who did not profess the Christian faith would be held captive until they converted. This quiet backwater comes alive on 21 November when the Salute festivities are in full swing (see Madonna della Salute).

This quiet thoroughfare, around the corner from Ponte delle Tette, is usually referred to as the “Carampane” (Ca’ Rampani), alias the red-light district as of 1421. Venice had some 11,600 officially registered courtesans in the 1500s. A particularly narrow alley, Calle della Raffineria, site of a 1713 sugar refinery, runs off it.

One of my top three restaurants in Venice . Highly thought of by venetians . A busy restaurant in a little calle by the Rialto bridge . Very popular with locals and tourists alike . No bookings taken so it's advisable to be there close to opening at 7pm . The staff are friendly and chatty , service efficient and the food excellent - the whole array of venetian classic dishes . Handily close to the ancient Cantina Do Mori where you can have a nice glass of wine as an aperitivo prior to your meal . Superb restaurant . Highly recommended .
