Anice Stellato is , for me , one of the top three restaurants in Venice , along with Vini da Gigio , also in Cannaregio , and Alla Madonna . The restaurant is on a quiet canal north of the Ghetto , away from the more touristy areas . However , it is very popular with local venetians , so much so that booking is essential well in advance . I telephoned from Scotland ten days before and was glad that I did as on the night the staff sent away a number of people who had turned up without booking in the hope of getting a table . The service is friendly and efficient and the food excellent . The starter [ primo ] that I had on the night , prawns in a basil sauce , was to die for . The friendly little enosteria " Al Timon " is also close by , on the Fondamenta dei Ormesini , and perfectly placed for a pre dinner glass of wine . I highly recommend both .
