  • Self-service restaurant with generous plates of pasta and salads served inside or out.

  • Straight espresso , frothy cappuccino or caffè latte in a tall glass with hot milk.

  • This former osteria is now a trendy restaurant that serves memorable seafood in a pretty “hidden courtyard” (corte sconta ). Don’t miss pincia , the local bread pudding, for dessert. The house wine is also wonderful. Booking ahead is essential.

  • Reservations are essential at this sophisticated restaurant, where the owners base the day’s menu on what is fresh at the market. They might have pappardelle con ostriche e zafferano (flat ribbon pasta with oysters and saffron), or moleche fritte con polenta (fried soft-shelled crab with cornmeal).

  • Devil’s Forest Pub

This “pub” sports a real red London phonebox, draught beers and ales, light meals served until midnight and even a dartboard and live music.

  • Do Forni

Right by Piazza San Marco, frequented by business people and politicians. Customers enter an imitation Orient Express dining car to be greeted by displays of glistening seafood. Book ahead.

  • Animated neighbourhood bar with all manner of counter food ranging from baccalà (salted cod) on crusty bread or hearty musetto sausage, served with great smiles by the affable young owners. Decent selection of Veneto wines too.

  • Calves’ liver Venetian-style cooked slowly with onions and vinegar.

  • Fiaschetteria Toscana

Historic locale with a courtyard and superb food. Filetto di rombo con carciofi (turbot fillet with artichokes) and tagliolini neri al ragù di astice (black cuttlefish pasta with lobster) stand out.

  • A welcoming eatery whose menu features flavours from the Middle East.
