The uniquely romantic city of Venice was built entirely on water and has managed to survive into the 21st century without cars. Narrow alleyways and canals pass between sumptuous palaces and magnificent churches, colourful neighbourhood markets and quiet backwaters, unchanged for centuries. Few cities possess such an awesome line-up of sights for visitors.

Far more than a Pizzeria. A treat to find. a few outside tables. Good service. Good value. 10 minutes from Rialto and st Marks but a million miles from the so called fashionable restaurants. Once we found it we did not find anything better

Superb restaurant just off the Strada Nova , along Fondamenta San Felice , run by the friendly Paolo Lazzari and his sister . Very popular with Venetians , very busy so booking essential . The food is amazing , lots of tasty venetian seafood . Service is friendly and efficient . A definite "must " if you are visiting Venice for a couple of days .

The Byzantine church is the most beautiful spot of Venice. It's one of the few symbols left of the history and culture of the old Ducato di Venezia.

The fascinating and little-known island of San Servolo, sits in the Venetian lagoon. Reached by vaporetto (half-hourly/hourly water bus) from San Zaccaria, it is the perfect place for a peaceful escape. Four of the island’s five hectars are beautiful gardens and it houses ancient 7th/8th century Benedictine settlements and the current buildings of the Province of Venice – perfect for an afternoon spent exploring. The island is home to the Venice International University and only academics, students or those visiting for a conference may stay overnight, but it is still a delightful getaway day trip.

It is a beautiful spiral white marble staircase in an out of the way spot in the Corte Contarini.

You enter on the ground floor thinking "I hope this is worth the admission" and you are amazed at the grand paintings that surround you -- when you realize that the guidebook says "go upstairs!" and then, like going upstairs at the Sainte Chappelle in Paris, you are awestruck! Tintoretto's on the walls and the ceiling, surrounded by carved wood and gold ornament, full of light and shadow and color. Fantastic! (Use the mirros that they kindly provide to look at the ceiling.)
