Venice’s smallest but foremost sestiere (district) named after the city’s patron saint is bounded by the Grand Canal on all but one side, which explains the number of stately palaces in the area. It revolves around the buzz of Piazza San Marco and the majestic Doge’s Palace, the political and legal core of the city until the 18th century. Running off the square are the Mercerie and Calle Larga XXII Marzo, offering wall-to-wall designer shopping. But beyond that San Marco has a residential air, with a great range of places to eat. Don’t hesitate to wander down minor alleyways: surprises include unusual wellheads and many craft workshops.

  • You can't go to Venice without sampling a Harry's Bar Belini - perfect after a hard days walking/exploring and of course shopping!

  • Hotel Saturnia & International

The Saturnia is an historical 4 star property operating since 1908, with a great central location, just 5 minuts walk from St. Mark's but also close to any other main monument of Venice, like the Rialto bridge, the Accademia art gallery. The official website offers lots of information and up-to-date discounts and special offers.

  • The Byzantine church is the most beautiful spot of Venice. It's one of the few symbols left of the history and culture of the old Ducato di Venezia.
