Top 10 Bars and Cafés
-
1. Pasticceria Zanin
The coffee and cake shop for Venetians. The narrow bar only does counter service, so you have to stand up for your cappuccino and croissant for breakfast or Campari soda in the evening. Delectable ice cream in summer.
-
2. Pasticceria Marchini
No drinks or seating, but a paradise for those with a sweet tooth. Orange and pistachio chocolates come in Venetian mask shapes.
-
3. Caffè Brasilia
Tuck in to a huge fresh fruit salad smothered with yogurt or a tramezzino sandwich in this quiet side-alley café. The coffee’s good too.
-
4. Bar al Teatro
Next door to the renowned Fenice Theatre (see Teatro La Fenice), this legendary establishment offers outdoor seating on a patio. Otherwise go inside to the bar and munch a toasted sandwich.
-
5. Devil’s Forest Pub
This “pub” sports a real red London phonebox, draught beers and ales, light meals served until midnight and even a dartboard and live music.
-
6. Caffè al Ponte del Lovo
Venetian sweetmeats can be enjoyed here, but most come for the Spritz apéritif, reputedly the best in town (see Spritz).
-
7. Le Café
Have a fresh orange juice or a cappuccino and pastry as you watch life go by in the square.
-
8. Hostaria ai Rusteghi
Excellent wines from Friuli, Tuscany and the Veneto, served with delectable, savoury titbits.
-
9. McDonald’s
Burgers and French fries at approachable prices, though the decor is the same the world over.
-
10. Ai Assassini
A great osteria in a cul-de-sac near the Fenice. Stand at the bar for appetizing snacks or treat yourself to a table.
