    Great-value palace guest-house run by friendly nuns and set in a shady garden right on the lagoon edge. Breakfast available; 11pm curfew.

  • 2. Archie’s House

    The cheapest backpacker’s option in town, close to the San Leonardo market with heaps of cafés and trattorias, and only 10 minutes from the station. Just turn up for a bed and you’ll be greeted by an eccentric Chinese-Italian family. Rates get lower depending on the number of occupants for a room and length of stay. Internet.

  • 3. Alloggi Gerotto Calderan

    Handy for the station, with airy rooms, some with bath. Clientele are welcomed by enthusiastic English-speaking staff. Bargain down the rates in low season.

  • 4. Il Lato Azzurro

    Great-value lodgings on this garden island where sea breezes are ensured. They arrange canoe trips, bicycles, picnic lunches and half board, entailing mainly vegetarian meals with locally grown produce.

  • 5. Istituto Artigianelli

    Close to the sunny Zattere, this religious-trade institution has new modern rooms with bath. Book in advance.

  • 6. Domus Civica

    These university rooms are available in the summer months (Jul–Sep). Discounts for students and Rolling Venice participants (see Rolling Venice). No meals, but plenty of cafés in the vicinity.

  • 7. Al Gobbo

    The “Hunchback” is a clean small-scale hotel with a couple of rooms overlooking a bustling square. Easy access from the railway station.

  • 8. Al Campaniel Guesthouse

    Spanish-Venetian couple Gloria and Marco are discreet hosts and offer spotless rooms close to the San Tomà boat stop. Each room has breakfast-making facilities.

  • 9. Instituto Canossiano

    A modernized, converted convent with vast courtyards to wander around. Automatic distributing machines for snacks and drinks, otherwise it’s not far to the Zattere. There’s a midnight curfew.

  • 10. Al Santo

    This simple hotel is very conveniently located, only a 10-minute stroll from Padua’s main sights (see Basilica del Santo).
