  • 1. Hotel San Stefano

Discerning style, maximum comfort (Jacuzzi in all rooms) and breathtaking views. Great care is taken with details in this slender tall palace.

  • 2. San Cassiano – Ca’ Favretto

Right on the Grand Canal, but hidden away in the maze of alleyways close to Rialto, is a 16th-century palace, converted into a hotel named after a 19th-century artist. Elegant rooms with all mod cons.

  • 3. Locanda San Barnaba

Minutes from the Ca’ Rezzonico ferry stop, a quiet, elegant palazzo hotel, with original frescoes in many of the rooms, which are named after Goldoni’s plays.

  • 4. La Residenza

In a pretty square behind the Riva degli Schiavoni (see Riva degli Schiavoni), a rather ramshackle but authentic palace atmosphere greets guests. The rooms are modest but comfortable.

  • 5. Casa Verardo

Beautifully renovated small-scale palace featuring an atmospheric salon with antique furniture where breakfast is served on a pretty terrace overlooking a canal. Internet access and full bar service.

  • 6. Locanda Leon Bianco

Parquet floors alternate with Venetian terrazzo in this modest atmospheric palazzo, in a quiet backwater just over the bridge from Campo SS Apostoli. A couple of rooms look across the Grand Canal to Rialto.

  • 7. Albergo Guerrato

Charming old place at Rialto, saturated with history and dating back to 1288. No great views but heaps of charm and space.

  • 8. Locanda La Corte

A relaxing atmosphere prevails in this renovated 16th-century palace. It once served the ambassador from Brescia and is impeccably furnished with period pieces. Breakfast is served in the courtyard.

  • 9. Villa Ducale

Halfway between Padua and Venice, this stately residence stands in a lovely private park with statues, while the beautiful rooms have all mod cons plus frescoes and glass chandeliers.

  • 10. Al Sole

A beautiful place to stay, convenient for Piazzale Roma, this 16th-century palace is often used as a film set, with a huge lobby and a courtyard draped in wisteria. Rooms have all mod cons.
