  • 1. La Fenice

    World-famous opera and concert performances are back at this glorious theatre, re-inaugurated in December 2003 (see Teatro La Fenice). Productions range from Verdi and Rossini to contemporary composers.

  • 2. Teatro Malibran

    In a quiet square near Rialto stands the gleaming Malibran Theatre, re-inaugurated in 2001 to take on part of the Fenice’s productions. Dating back to 1678 as Teatro Grimani, it was renamed after the 19th-century Spanish mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran.

  • 3. Films in English

    The Giorgione cinema has English-language screenings one evening a week in winter. In late summer, the outdoor cinema in Campo San Polo means delights from the Venice Film Festival.

  • 4. Teatro Goldoni

    One of the oldest theatres in the city, dating from the 17th century. It acquired its present name in 1875 in honour of the 18th-century playwright Carlo Goldoni (see Carlo Goldoni). An excellent range of international plays is performed in Italian Nov–May.

  • 5. Vivaldi Concerts

    Inspiring performances of Vivaldi’s music can be enjoyed just off Piazza San Marco. Tickets are available at agencies, hotels or directly from the palace.

  • 6. Chamber Music

    While listening to the uplifting notes of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons , or a masterpiece from Bach or Benedetto Marcello take a moment to unwind and relax from the day’s sightseeing. The Church of San Vidal was rebuilt around 1700 and has a spacious interior.

  • 7. Concerts in Costume

    Youthful but expert singers and musicians perform comic operas at the Scuola dei Carmini (see Scuola Grande dei Carmini). It makes for a memorable evening.

  • 8. Ai Musicanti

    The top-class orchestra and singers perform opera highlights by Verdi and Rossini, music by Vivaldi and Mozart, and Italian folk music.

  • 9. Auditorium Santa Margherita

    This converted cinema regularly stages live ethnic and other music, free of charge. The day’s programme is generally posted on the door.

  • 10. Teatro Fondamente Nuove

    Formerly a lumber store, since 1993 the premises have been buzzing with experimental theatre and contemporary dance. Festivals of off-beat films are also on the avant garde programme.
