  • 1. IYH Ostello Venezia

    Well-run hostel offering cheap meals and a beautiful setting on Giudecca, a 35-minute vaporetto trip from the railway station (line No. 82) and five minutes to Piazza San Marco (see Piazza San Marco).

    University student hostel which lets out dorm beds to backpackers, in rambling convent grounds. Cooking facilities are available in summer.

    A wonderful place to stay near Campo Santa Maria Formosa (see Campo Santa Maria Formosa), Palazzo Cavagnis is a guesthouse run by the Waldensian and Methodist community and has frescoed dormitories, nice rooms and apartments for families. Advance booking essential.

    Popular three-star venue for campers and backpackers (in a caravan), right on the lagoon edge. Well connected via bus No. 11 from Mestre railway station or the Alilaguna ferry from the Zattere in Venice. Open year-round.

  • 6. Camping Alba d’Oro

    Only 2 km (1 mile) from the airport (bus No. 15), this spacious camp site has a swimming pool, internet point, pizzeria and shops. Tent-less visitors sleep in cabins. Closed December to February.

  • 7. IYH Ostello di Mira

    This recently opened hostel is located just outside Venice in a lovely country setting. Car parking is available. All linen is provided. Closed October to February.

  • 8. IYH Città di Padova

    A bit out of the way, but it is only a short walk to the main sights. The hostel also benefits from a surprisingly beautiful setting in an ornamental grassy square.

  • 9. IYH Ostello Olimpico

    A cheery, helpful hostel close to both the town’s main Tourist Office and the Teatro Olimpico (see Teatro Olimpico). Meals available at a special low price at a neighbouring bar and restaurant. Internet point and bike hire available. Closed one month in winter.

    This beautiful 16th-century villa on the hillside above the Roman amphitheatre doubles as the official youth hostel, with dormitory accommodation. It is only 3 km (2 miles) from Verona’s railway station. Evening meals are available.
