  • 1. Pensione La Calcina

In 1877 Ruskin stayed at this guesthouse on the Zattere, as the friendly staff eagerly explain. Of course, the rooms have been modernized since those days but they have retained their charm and parquet floors. An exclusive street-level terrace overlooks the Giudecca Canal, while another surveys the rooftops. Advance reservations are essential.

  • 2. Accademia Villa Maravege

Book well ahead to stay in this beautiful 17th-century villa near the Accademia (see Accademia Galleries), which was formerly the Russian embassy. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the private garden.

  • 3. Giorgione

A comfortable 4-star hotel with high standards, a warm reception and a pretty garden. Last-minute special offers.

  • 4. Ca’ della Corte

Charming bed-and-breakfast with spotless rooms, which boast all the latest equipment, such as satellite TV. Very handy to Piazzale Roma.

  • 5. Hotel Flora

Though small, the pretty courtyard with creeping greenery is an oasis of calm after the city crowds. Good views from the upper rooms.

  • 6. Locanda Cipriani

A peaceful, sophisticated place on the island of Torcello (see Torcello), with a list of illustrious past guests. A famed restaurant overlooks a garden, and you are allowed to explore the island after the day-trippers have left.

  • 7. Ca’ del Borgo

Charming 15th-century villa located on the southern end of the Lido, in an old fishing village. Easy access to Venice and the beach.

  • 8. Hotel Marconi

Popular hotel by Rialto Bridge, with outside seating reserved for guests. Warm reception though simple rooms.

  • 9. San Simon Ai Due Fanali

Tastefully renovated former monastery – rooms feature wooden rafters. Several apartments are available.

  • 10. Villa Giustinian

An 18th-century villa with a swimming pool, park, magnificent rooms and a fine restaurant. A 40-minute bus trip to Venice. Buses pass every 20 minutes.
