  • 1. Rossi

Recommended family hotel, high on hospitality. Spotless rooms, many with lovely views, and conveniently placed for Strada Nova. Book well in advance.

  • 2. Locanda Ca’ Zose

Cosy immaculate rooms, several with enchanting canal views, run by sisters Graziella and Valentina. Very quiet, handy for La Salute vaporetto and the Guggenheim.

  • 3. Hotel alla Salute Da Cici

Ezra Pound spent time in this hotel set in the Salute residential area, a stone’s throw from the Zattere, not to mention Accademia (see Accademia Galleries) and Guggenheim galleries (see Peggy Guggenheim Collection).

  • 4. Bel Sito & Berlino

A well-placed 3-star hotel facing the Baroque wonders of the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio (see Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari). The decor is old style and the atmosphere is warm.

  • 5. Al Gazzettino

Centrally located between Rialto and San Marco, this is a basic, decent value hotel. The downstairs walls are papered with sheets from the city’s Il Gazzettino newspaper, a long-standing neighbour until its relocation to the more practical mainland.

  • 6. Hotel Fontana

Family-managed 2-star establishment in a quiet spot just around the corner from San Zaccaria. Very much a middle-of-the-road place with kitschy decor but satellite TV.

  • 7. Al Gambero

A guaranteed old favourite on a bridge halfway between Rialto and the Piazza San Marco, wonderful for many sights and shopping sprees. Downstairs is Le Bistrot, a popular nightspot (see Le Bistrot de Venise).

  • 8. Locanda SS Giovanni e Paolo

Breakfast is served in this handy non-smoking guesthouse, only 5 mins from Piazza San Marco.

  • 9. Locanda Sant’Anna

Despite its dingy appearance and impossible-to-find location, this guesthouse in down-to-earth Castello is friendly and popular, particularly during the Biennale art exhibitions held every two years (see Biennale Art Exhibition).

  • 10. Hotel Torcolo

You could hardly wish for a more central location in Verona, just around the corner from the Arena. Nothing exceptional, but friendly and clean. Guest parking available.
