This rococo building (1755) was formerly the site of Vienna University. The Academy of Sciences hall staged the premiere of Joseph Haydn’s The Creation in 1808.

The Habsburgs confiscated this palace in 1316 from Otto von Haymo who had conspired against them. It functioned as the town hall until 1883.

The Vienna Stock Exchange moved into this Theophil von Hansen Classicist brick building in 1877.

Founded in the Middle Ages as a monastery, today the building hosts the city’s arts college.

Built in 1618, the simple design of this church is in line with the Capuchin order’s doctrine. Emperor Matthias (1557– 1619) established a crypt for the Habsburgs here (see p62).

Emperor Ferdinand III’s widow had this monumental church built in 1662. It is more reminiscent of a palace than a place of worship.

When Duke Leopold VI returned safely from a crusade in 1219 he built a church on this site. Despite some alterations, its medieval character is still visible.

After a plague epidemic that killed more than 100,000 came to an end in 1679, Emperor Leopold I had this Baroque monument installed, dedicating it to the Holy Trinity.
