  • 1. Café Museum

    The simple but very stylish interior of the popular Café Museum was originally designed by the architect Adolf Loos. The back room has tables for card games and chess (see p77).

  • 2. Wein & Co Bar

    Just opposite the Secession Building (see pp32–3), this trendy place is not only a wine shop but also a bar with more than 60 wines from all across the globe. It also serves Italian cuisine.

  • 3. Café Sperl

    This café has been in business for more than 120 years and has a reputation of being frequented by the city’s artists, actors and nobles. It is just as popular today as it has always been (see p77).

  • 4. Café Drechsler

    Established in 1918, this typical Viennese coffeehouse is particularly popular with night owls and early birds as it opens in the early morning hours.

  • 5. Café Ritter

    A traditional café just off the main shopping drag with the obligatory variety of coffees, cakes, snacks and newspapers. A great break from nearby shopping.

  • 6. Naschmarkt Deli

    The little café amid the bustling Naschmarkt market stalls serves excellent breakfasts all day long and includes all kinds of ethnic cuisines, from Viennese to Turkish.

  • 7. Kunsthalle Café

    A fashionable hang-out in the Kunsthalle exhibition space on Karlsplatz (see p45). Occasionally DJs hit the decks and in summer there is seating in a very pleasant garden.

  • 8. Kaunitz Bar

    Enjoy drinks in these fashionable surroundings with a huge, round bar. There is also a restaurant on the first floor serving good international cuisine.

  • 9. Freihaus

    A good spot for a drink in the evening but also a place to enjoy excellent food. There is an extensive wine list and a great selection of whiskies.

  • 10. Roxy

    If staying up all night is your thing, head to Roxy, which opens when most other places in the city close. With live DJ music in a relaxed bar atmosphere, there is also a dance floor.
