Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • A 25-minute seaplane flight from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront to Christiansted, St. Croix, lets you explore the slower pace of this historic town.

  • Hop the ferry at Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay and spend a day exploring Virgin Islands National Park.

  • Ferries run from Red Hook and the Edward Wilmoth Blyden ferry terminal in Charlotte Amalie to Road Town or West End in Tortola, which are very different from the USVI towns.

  • Perfect for a quick lunch for families.

  • Both territories suffered massive devastation when Hurricane Hugo hit on September 17 and 18, 1989 and Marilyn on September 15 and 16, 1995. Other hurricanes in the late 1990s caused further damage, prompting strengthening of the infrastructure against future catastrophes.

  • Reefs teeming with colorful fish and coral provide interesting diving no matter where you go, but the best diving is found offshore on a boat trip (seeDive & Snorkel Trips).

  • While you can spend hours at the gaming tables in the Divi, the only casino in the USVI, it is also one of the hottest nightspots around with live music almost every night. The casino stays open until at least 4am all week.

  • Rooms done in blue and white with kitchenettes stretch along the beach at Turner Hole. The casino (seeDivi Carina Bay Casino, St. Croix) is a major draw and the resort’s Starlight Bar & Grille offers excellent dining.

  • Dolphins usually live in deeper water, so look for them a bit offshore as they arc in and out.

  • One of Puerto Rico’s gifts to the rum industry, Don Q manufactures many varieties – its Light is quite popular.
