Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • Bolts of colorful fabric, table linen with tropical allure, batik wraps to use on the beach, and soft toys with marine motifs fill this store.

  • Years of poor crops, hurricanes, and other calamities pushed agricultural laborers to the brink, leading to the October 1,1878 Fireburn. Frederiksted and other parts of St. Croix went up in flames on the only day of the year laborers were allowed to sign new work contracts.

  • Stroll from your room onto the beach at this casual spot in Spanish Town. Some rooms front on the beach; others are tucked back in the garden. The restaurant is excellent.

  • This alfresco restaurant gives a Caribbean twist to standards such as duck, steak, and lobster. Make a meal out of the divine pumpkin soup and the crisp conch fritters.

  • Early-bird specials and a menu that includes pasta, fish, and conch fritters at this casual place.

  • Fish in the North Drop and other locations. For bonefishing, Caribbean Fly Fishing is the best.

  • Fish for the big ones on a saltwater trip off St. Croix on a charter boat.

  • Charters depart from marinas at the island’s east end for the North Drop, located off St. Thomas and St. John and home to wahoo, bonito, kingfish, black-fin or yellowfin tuna, and marlin.

  • Charter boats leave from the Cruz Bay waterfront on fishing trips to North or South Drops. Captain Byron Oliver also offers trips closer to St. John.

  • Go bonefishing in Anegada’s fringing reef with Garfield’s Guides.
