Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • Surrounded by gardens, this alfresco restaurant may serve rack of lamb with fresh mint. Save room for the sinful chocolate swirl cheesecake.

  • This tree grows in such profusion on hillsides and roadways that its yellow blossom serves as the USVI territorial flower.

  • Features Mediterranean and Italian fare as well as fresh Caribbean lobster and fish.

  • Eaten by residents in a variety of dishes, goats roam where they want in the St. John’s Coral Bay area and throughout the BVI. Their eating habits cause extensive erosion problems and their droppings make paths slippery. They’re also noisy creatures, particularly when a baby goes astray.

  • You’ll find this tasty goat stew on the menu at only the most local of West Indian restaurants in the islands. Cooked with the same type of goat you see wandering along the roadsides, its other ingredients include onions, garlic, tomatoes, and the cook’s own special spices.

  • Carambola Golf Club’s 18-hole course is the best, but the 18 holes at the Buccaneer Hotel (seeThe Buccaneer Hotel, St. Croix) also get accolades. Reef Golf Club has a nine-hole course.

  • Play the famed Devil’s Triangle at the 18-hole Mahogany Run Golf Course. It overlooks the ocean, adding great views to your golf game.

  • A mere 30 guests share 850 acres at this remote retreat off Tortola’s north coast. There are seven lovely beaches scattered around the island. Relax in secluded cottages with understated furnishings.

  • A gully or ravine. In heavy rains, water from the hillsides rushes downguts to the sea.

  • The annual concert series runs from October to May.
