Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • Originally imported to control rats, mongooses are now well settled in the islands. You’ll see these long, brown, and furry animals scurrying across the road or poking around garbage cans. Mongoose Junction Shopping Center in St. John is so named because the creatures gathered at garbage cans located nearby.

  • Open Wednesday to Saturday, this Christiansted nightspot brings in a youthful crowd on Saturdays when DJs spin great dance music. Saturday is also ladies night, with a discount on drinks for women. On Wednesdays, the crowd enjoys karaoke. Moonraker is open until 2am all nights.

  • The marina at Wickhams Cay II houses bare and crewed boats (seeSailing in the British Virgin Islands) aplenty. Guests heading out for a trip often stay ashore at night, socializing at the marina’s bar with sailors working on their boats at the adjacent boat yard.

  • Part of the Marriott chain, Morning Star has it all – a great beachfront location, access to the amenities at adjacent Frenchman’s Reef, and a superb restaurant.

  • The Barbados-based Mount Gay has many varieties, but its Eclipse is most often found on island shelves.

  • This restaurant and shopping complex offers superb views of the island chain. The bar’s banana daiquiris are famous.

  • The delicious West Indian fare served on the upstairs front porch of Mrs. Scatliffe’s home includes superb pumpkin soup and chicken with coconut rice. Reservations by 5pm mandatory.

  • This pleasant store offers clothes, canvas bags, toys, and gift items galore at what may be the best prices in St. John.

  • Of its numerous rum varieties, the Jamaican Myer’s Dark is one of the most popular with rum connoisseurs.

  • Located just steps from Cane Garden Bay beach on the island’s north side, this small hotel has rooms with a fresh, tropical feel. Apart from the hotel’s Garden Grille, there are several dining and nightlife options in Cane Garden Bay.
