Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • Major hotels, beaches, and marinas have dive centers. You can also take a boat trip to scuba-dive around the reefs and wrecks that sit off St. Thomas (seeTop 10 Dive Sitesand;Wreck of the WIT Shoal II, off St. Thomas).

  • Several watersports centers run dive trips to offshore and in-shore reefs, and to the Wreck of the Rhone in the BVI.

  • Looking a lot like their namesake vegetable, sea cucumbers slink along the ocean floor as they feed.

  • Owned by Mark and Nanci Shekleton, Sea View Homes delivers just what it promises – luxury homes with sea views. All are in the Great Cruz Bay/Chocolate Hole, Rendezvous Bay, and Fish Bay areas. Sizes range from a cozy cottage to five bedrooms, all with attractive tropical furnishings.

  • With beachfront and garden rooms, this spot at Apple Bay conjures up images of the old Caribbean. In spite of the modern touches in the rooms, there’s something in the air that takes you back decades.

  • Studio and one- and two-bedroom units in Estate Nazareth front onto an attractive crescent of white sand perfect for sunning. All units have patios or decks, and attractive tropical furnishings. The café (seeBlue Moon Café) is definitely worth a stop. This is one of the few disabled access resorts.

  • Fish, chicken, or pasta dinner.

  • Slightly ramshackle but hugely popular, this yachtie spot dishes up the best burgers, beers, and big screen television sports (seeSkinny Legs Bar & Restaurant, St. John).

  • A yachtie hangout with a sail for part of its roof. The menu runs to fish burgers (seeSkinny Legs Bar & Restaurant).

  • Go for the view but stay for the food, including the filet mignon in a cranberry and tequila sauce (seeSkyworld, Tortola).
