Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • Nifty cotton dresses that do double duty as beach cover-ups, straw hats, colorful bags, casual jewelry, and accessories from this shop round off your tropical wardrobe.

  • Nifty recycled glass items.

  • With names that reflect the owners’ California roots, the 13 rooms at this small hotel at Cruz Bay’s edge have different sizes and decor. Guests gather at the small pool or the hotel bar after a shopping or beach trip.

  • Touring performers in winter at this tiny Cruz Bay theater.

  • Concerts in Cruz and Coral Bay churches.

  • Held every April, sometimes running into May, this event, like those on the other islands, has numerous activities including parades, beauty pageants, and food fairs. The closing parade is an all-day affair that draws thousands to Main Street in Charlotte Amalie.

  • Ride the cable car for great views from 700 ft (210 m) above the harbor.

  • Look along the ocean floor for yellow-gold starfish. They’re not that common, so it’s a real treat to find them.

  • In March, August, and November, the St. Croix Landmarks Society sponsors an arts and crafts fair at Whim Plantation Museum (seeWhim Plantation Museum). Music, food, and camaraderie round off the day. This event affords an opportunity to explore the St. Croix art scene as well as sample local culture.

  • Tucked next to a pretty harbor, this cozy town stretches inland for several blocks. It offers eclectic shops, bars, restaurants, and people-watching within walking distance (seeStroll Through Cruz Bay, St. John).
