Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • Sitting almost in the sand, this charming place offers tropical twists on its menu (seeBlue Moon Café).

  • This funky little place on the waterfront has jazz on Sunday afternoons (seeBlue Moon).

  • Schools of this small, round, deep blue fish swim near reefs and rocks. Fun to watch while snorkeling.

  • While hotels organize day sails, most folks prefer to rent small sail or power boats for a trip around North Sound on their own.

  • The myriad activities at Bolongo Bay will keep even the most active child busy. And since kids under 12 stay free in their parents’ room, you’ll have some money left for extras. Summer packages often include free children’s meals, while guests opting for the all- and semi-inclusive plans get complimentary watersports gear.

  • As its name suggests, this sizzling spot is just a collection of ramshackle boards on the beach. Bomba’s legendary full moon parties are not to be missed if you like huge crowds and don’t mind the sale of, shall we say, less-than-legal substances that happens nearby.

  • From this popular overlook (seeBordeaux Overlook, St. John), you can admire Coral Bay below, and to the east the glorious turquoise sea, Norman Island, Peter Island, and the other islands along the BVI chain to Virgin Gorda. A tour bus favorite, the area can get quite busy with taxis and motorists trying to avoid people who wander into the road. The area also has a restaurant open for lunch and one open for dinner, plus a few gift shops.

  • Stop at this busy overlook for gorgeous views of the sea, Coral Bay, and in the distance, the BVI. There’s a tiny gift shop where you can buy some interesting souvenirs to take home. A snack shop and restaurant make this a good break on your round-the-island tour (seeBordeaux Overlook).

  • In colors that range from basic magenta to every spectrum of the red, orange, and white family, this Caribbean staple decorates yards and gardens across the islands. The plants can grow to an enormous size, but most serve as hedges.

  • Look for very chic tropical wear, including bathing suits that make less-than-perfect figures look great, and flattering hats at this pricey boutique.
