Virgin Islands

Mere specks in the Caribbean, the US and British Virgin Islands sit within eyesight of each other. The Stars and Stripes flutters over St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and the Union Jack over Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and the outer islands, but all offer tropical sun, soft sand beaches, and turquoise sea. In both territories motorists drive on the left, a decidedly British practice, while the US dollar serves as legal tender. However, each island has its own ambience, from the bustle in St. Thomas to downright sleepiness in the outer BVIs.

  • This hotel’s Beach Bar has a variety of music every night in winter (seeCaneel Bay Resort, St. John).

  • This exclusive hotel features seven beaches, lots of activities, fine restaurants, and a staff that stays on its toes. For the ultimate visit, opt for Cottage Seven, once the vacation spot of the resort’s original owner Laurance Rockefeller.

  • This 2-mile (3-km) trail leaves from near Mongoose Junction Shopping Center (seeShopping) in Cruz Bay, goes past a scenic overlook, and connects with the North Shore Road near Caneel Bay Resort (seeCaneel Bay Resort, St. John).

  • You can make a meal out of appetizers such as the octopus salad and crostini with tomato and garlic here.

  • Pick your own lobster right from the pool or dine on fresh local fish grilled Cajun style or drizzled with a spicy sauce. Meat-eaters can opt for lamb and filet mignon.

  • Jazz at the Sunday brunch, various bands on Wednesday and Fridays.

  • Shop here for unusual jewelry at reasonable prices. Special items, such as the sea life globes with falling glitter, make fun gifts.

  • This venerable jewelry store has fine pieces in all price ranges.

  • Step in for Godiva chocolates and other tempting treats. Candy melts fast in the tropics – make this your last stop.

  • The owner Donna Ford and her capable staff manage about 25 villas with lovely views, ranging in size from two bedrooms to six, and a handful of condominium units. Most are on the island’s East End, but the company has several at other locations.
