  • The hotel’s 37 rooms snuggle up to a white sandy beach on the island’s north shore at La Grande Princesse. Rooms are modern with patios or balconies, floral accents, and great sea views. Christiansted’s dining and shopping sit just a 10-minute drive away.

  • This 12-room hotel, on the island’s eastern side, is at the sheltered Hodge’s Creek, center of the Sunsail Charter marine scene. Meet old salts at the hotel’s bar, or spend your days gazing out to sea from your airy hotel room.

  • This mid-rise hotel across the road from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront attracts business people and vacationers who want a modern, in-town location. Rooms have typical Holiday Inn amenities, but sport tropical touches. Take a taxi to the beach or linger at the pool.

  • Finished in 1829, the building was the home of a French sea captain; its 15 rooms have an old-world charm with modern touches. The location, on a hill overlooking Charlotte Amalie Harbor and the city, places it in the heart of the shopping and restaurant district.

  • Located just outside Road Town, this has slightly dowdy rooms, all with balconies and some with full kitchens. Make it the base for a busy Tortola vacation, returning for a swim in the pool or dinner at restaurant.

  • Fabulous harbor and city views greet you from the terrace and many rooms at this cozy hotel sitting high up above Charlotte Amalie. Several rooms have four-poster beds. Island lore has it that the hotel’s 17th-century stone tower was used as a lookout by the pirate Blackbeard.

  • This rambling spot features a popular courtyard restaurant. The 22 rooms are fresh with tropical colors; six of them share baths. Not much of a view, but the convenience of being close to Cruz Bay’s shopping and dining lures visitors.

  • Long-time island resident Kathy McLaughlin looks after around 10 vacation villas, all decorated with tropical flair and most located in the Chocolate Hole/Great Cruz Bay area. A six-bedroom villa at Bordeaux called Château Margot practically qualifies as a castle.

  • The hillside Island View Guest House, northwest of Charlotte Amalie, delivers just that – a gorgeous view of St. Thomas from its spacious porch. Rooms are homey with a tropical touch. Enjoy a swim in the pool, or head out for the beach, to take in the sights or shop in nearby Charlotte Amalie.

  • While these villas are found all over St. Croix, most are on the East End, with great views from their locations up in the hills. One villa with seven bedrooms is perfect for family reunions.
