  • 1. Day Sails

Book a day sail to an offshore cay at your hotel or through Connections or Adventures in Paradise in Cruz Bay.

  • 2. Fishing

Charter boats leave from the Cruz Bay waterfront on fishing trips to North or South Drops. Captain Byron Oliver also offers trips closer to St. John.

  • 3. Hiking

There are hiking trails all over the island. Some are easy treks over flat terrain, but others head uphill.

  • 4. Horseback Riding

Carolina Corral, located just outside Coral Bay, runs one-hour trips along quiet lanes and pebbly beaches. Rides leave from Route 107 across from the restaurant Time for a Break.

  • 5. Kayaking

Rent a kayak from hotels. Arawak Expeditions at Low Key Watersports in Cruz Bay does day trips and overnight sojourns. Crabby’s Watersports in Coral Bay drop you off so you can paddle back to their base.

  • 6. Scuba

Several watersports centers run dive trips to offshore and in-shore reefs, and to the Wreck of the Rhone in the BVI.

  • 7. Snorkeling

Just stroll off the beach and head for the rocks or the reefs to see colorful fish and sea life. Practice first in knee-high water to get the hang of it.

  • 8. Swimming

Clear, warm water with high salt content makes it easy to float. Join the locals for their early morning or late afternoon swims along the island’s beaches.

  • 9. Tennis

The Westin Resort (seeWestin Resort & Villas, St. John) lets in non-guests to its six lighted courts for a small fee. Or play with the locals on the public tennis courts near the fire station in Cruz Bay.

  • 10. Windsurfing

Rent sailboards at breezy Cinnamon Bay Beach (seeCinnamon Bay Beach) for an exhilarating trip around the bay. The staff give lessons for novices or for those who want to improve their skills.
