  • 1. Bay Rum Tree

    Fragrant bay rum trees grow in woody areas. The leaves are often used to make aftershave.

  • 2. Broom Palm

    The only indigenous palm, this short tree has thin fronds that form a larger circular leaf.

  • 3. Calabash

    Artisans use the gourd-like fruit to make bowls and musical instruments. It grows quite tall in forested areas.

  • 4. Flamboyant

    Come summer, bright red and orange flamboyants bloom all over the islands. You may also see a gold variety.

  • 5. Ginger Thomas

    This tree grows in such profusion on hillsides and roadways that its yellow blossom serves as the USVI territorial flower.

  • 6. Lime Tree

    Bearing yellow-green fruits used in everything from ice tea to tarts, lime trees grow wild and in gardens.

  • 7. Mahogany

    Stretching skyward, stately mahogany trees grow mostly in parks. Craftspeople use its wood to make furniture.

  • 8. Manchineel

    Watch out for this tree found near beaches. It bears poisonous red fruits and the sap is extremely toxic.

  • 9. Palms

    From tall coconut-bearing trees to shorter feathery varieties, palm trees are found all over the USVI and BVI.

  • 10. Turpentine Tree

    Residents call them tourist trees because their bark is red and peels. These tall trees grow all over the islands.
