  • 1. Harvey’s Restaurant, St. Croix

Sarah Harvey dishes up great West Indian food at her unassuming restaurant. Yummy whelks in butter sauce, fish andfungi (a cornmeal and okra dish), and goat stew served with a variety of side dishes are the highlights. The helpings are huge.

  • 2. Sogo’s Restaurant, St. John

Sogo conjures up delicious West Indian fare in his tiny, unassuming restaurant. Favorites include meltingly tender steamed conch in lemon butter sauce, spicy curry goat stew, and mahi mahi (dolphin fish) with a flavourful creole sauce.

  • 3. Hercules’ Paté Delight, St. John

Hercules cooks up fish, chicken, and more, all well seasoned with fresh peppers, onions, and tomatoes at this hole-in-the-wall spot. His hold-in-the-hand patés make delicious on-the-go lunches. While you can eat at one of the few roadside tables, traffic noise and odors make take-out a better option.

  • 4. Walker’s by the Sea, St.Thomas

WA seaside location and fantastic Caribbean food makes Walker’s by the Sea a popular choice with locals and tourists alike. Favorite dishes include fried or steamed ole wife (a local seafood specialty) and braised oxtail in a herb-accented sauce.

  • 5. Lillian’s Caribbean Grill, St. Thomas

Stop by Lillian’s Caribbean Grill for local dishes such as rice and beans as well as a cool drink of passion fruit juice, sea moss, or ginger beer. For less adventurous eaters, Lillian’s also serves hamburgers and barbecued ribs along with fries. Customers can sit inside or out under shady umbrella tables.

  • 6. C&F Restaurant, Tortola

Lobster, conch in lime butter sauce, and curry are the highlights, as is the fine barbecue. The decor is on the modest side, but the food is always tasty.

  • 7. Roti Palace, Tortola

Coming north with Trinidadian immigrants, roti is a flat bread filled with delicious things. This unassuming place sitting up a hill does curried chicken with potatoes well, and other varieties such as lobster and vegetables.

  • 8. Mrs. Scatliffe’s Restaurant, Tortola

The delicious West Indian fare served on the upstairs front porch of Mrs. Scatliffe’s home includes superb pumpkin soup and chicken with coconut rice. Reservations by 5pm mandatory.

  • 9. Fischer’s Cove, Virgin Gorda

This alfresco restaurant gives a Caribbean twist to standards such as duck, steak, and lobster. Make a meal out of the divine pumpkin soup and the crisp conch fritters.

  • 10. Abe’s by the Sea, Jost Van Dyke

A very casual spot, Abe’s is famous for its Wednesday night pig roast, held only during the winter season. At other times, you’ll have to settle for fresh lobster, conch, fish, chicken, or the tasty barbecue.
